Literally you can feel it...

Miércoles, 28 de Octubre de 2009 20:40

Objectivity is a precious gift that the author never must leave, unless he or she wishes to lose the credibility and by result, his readers.

It is irrefutable the evidence that this humble author is a very big fan of the Open Source, but this author wishes to leave in clear that through no reason it happened, will not ignore some adverse commentary to so praiseworthy movement of the Information Technologies.

After the clarifying parenthesis, I come then to the main subject. The past Thursday October 22nd. 2009, with “big drums and fanfare” the launching of so called Windows 7 in whole world.

Results in the short term? Who attended the Windows 7 presentation in Mexico they could state an enormous sensation of doubt and why no, distrust towards the empty promises and words that the representing local personnel of the house of Redmond, Washington did within the framework of the event.

The hardly gained 1,8 NYSE points of the stock value by "the windows company", now has been losed today. By the way they are in true competition “hand by hand” against RedHat Linux.

There was no “overturned to the bookcases” like Windows Vista had, even this Operative System today has been named by the Microsoft's Marketing Director as - “… nongood” - (to see the entrance entitled “Trusting in the bad memory” http://www.enlared.tv/b3/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=122&itemid=6). Nor Mr. Will making phoney declarations as - “… we sold forty million copies” -.

On the not as short therm, wi see a very unconfortable companies that does not believe anything about any Microsoft product. Even more, here in Mexico a lot of companies are seriously testing to switch to another Operative Systems like MacOS-X or Linux.

In the other hand the landscape is more friendly to the inminent kick off of the new version of the Ubuntu Linux 9.10 or “Karmik Koala”, the most expected version for enthusiast and new becomers.

Just to see the review of the very important I.T. Magazines network: Ziff Davis. Those guys from the very famous Blog “Between the Lines (http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=26606)” from October the 27th, 2009 named: “Yes, Ubuntu can absolutely be the default Windows alternative”:

-”And I don’t just mean for geeks. I mean a real, viable alternative to Windows for many users despite the apparent quality of both Windows 7 and Server 2008”-

Also we can read: -”About a year and a half ago, ZDNet’s Adrian Kingsley-Hughes asked, “Is Ubuntu becoming the generic Linux distro?” and concluded that “the evolution of Ubuntu into the generic Linux distro isn’t a bad thing”. Fair enough, but Canonical’s Mark Shuttleworth took this idea a bit farther during a press conference call yesterday:
“We’ve already done a lot of work in developer ecosystem and we’re now increasingly interested in the non-developer consumer ecosystem, so that’s what all the OEM work is about,” Shuttleworth said, declaring that his focus was on “making sure that Ubuntu gets pre-installed and Ubuntu is available from Dell.com and others and making sure that Ubuntu is the default alternative to Windows.”
It's very useful to said for all those feell uncomfotably about the Support for this Linux distribution, there is a compnany called “Canonical”. Canonical was born and the core business of it is to support to Ubuntu Server, Desktop and Network flavors.

Another point to Ubuntu cause, is IBM. The big blue company and Canonical has a very hugh agreement to offer comprehensive ready to use Desktops.

If this will not enough, Dell put a bet on Ubuntu to be the official distribution for Laptops and Netbooks.
The most important thing to remember is the fact Ubuntu 9.10 is a one hundred percent distro, and has whole “Open Source” compliance, so thaths another point about how the people has better expectatives for this new version than Windows 7.

What can we see about this? Well... This is another demostration that the Final Customer is preffering Open Source than to lose time and money with a untrustable and bad products.

Conclussion? This is the right moment when the other free alternatives like Linux, Free BSD and MacOS-X take the chance, and at last the Finnal Customer really make an analysis and chose the best choice.

As the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King sayd: -”Free at last”-.

The dinner is served.
